At Dunkin'..... nice donuts!
Jim wanted to take us to Dunkin’ Donuts for
brekky because they’re baked, not fried!
So off we went. It was pretty
good, even the coffee! We then walked through the Ocean Plaza, past
the Bubba Gump restaurant and out along the beach front, looking at the
motorcycle racing memorial.
‘The History of
Indian Motorcycles racing at Daytona Beach, Florida
The
ride that Ed Kretz
will forever be remembered for was his victory in the inaugural Daytona 200
in 1937. Even in its first year, the Daytona Beach race was one of the most
important races on the calendar. It would go on to become the single most
important motorcycle race in America, and Kretz's win at the very first Daytona 200 race earned
him & Indian
Motorcycles a significant place in the history of the sport…’
Jim and Lesley had taken their car off for
a service. They had a few jobs to do
around the house so David and I decided to brave the local bus service and go
over to the mainland, to downtown Daytona.
It was easy – the bus depot is just at the end of their street, $1.75
one way – must have correct money. We
got out at Beach Street and started walking and looking through some
shops. We had lunch at a café then went
next door for the 2pm chocolate factory tour!
From their website:
‘The Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory was founded In 1925
by two industrious women, Riddell Angell and Cora Phelps. The company's rich
history began in the resort town of Mackinac Island, Michigan but at the start
of WWII that shop was closed and the company moved to Daytona Beach, FL.
With it's year round warm temperatures making chocolates in
Florida is a challenge today so imagine what it was like before the invention
of air conditioning. With passion, determination, and a commitment to quality
MS. Angell and Ms. Phelps were able to overcome all obstacles to create a
business that has become a tradition for many people.
When you visit Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory you will be
greeted by our friendly, courteous staff and offered free samples of our
chocolate. While here please be sure to take advantage of our free tour and
watch chocolate being made the old fashion way! When you leave here you will
understand why TripAdvisor.com named us one of the Top 10 Sweetest Destinations in America.’
The tour was very entertaining, the guide
extremely animated! We were given two
samples – one for each hand – and then went into the shop. They make unusual items such as ‘chocolate
covered potato chips’, ‘chocolate covered bacon’ and more….. Because David and I were on the bus in 90F
heat, we decided to not to buy but to wait until we can go back with a cooler
or when we’re enroute in the car to somewhere else!
We became a little lost trying to find the
bus station, but managed to find a CVS pharmacy and they told us where to walk
(not far) and caught the bus back to Beachside Daytona.
We returned in time to leave for Happy Hour
at Joe’s Crabshack – a restaurant on the pier at Daytona. Up on the highest level, it has great views
of the shore line. Good drink and
limited food specials – but it was magnificient! We had a great time!
Things are looking happy - round 2!
The boys and their beers......... oh! & THAT view!
